Regarding weather conditions:
Whitewater rafting is fantastic whether it's sunny or rainy!

What is the best time of year to go rafting?

The ideal time for rafting varies based on the river's conditions:

The rivers typically fluctuate from May to October. High water levels occur usually from June to mid-July, coinciding with the snow melting season. This period offers exhilarating rapids, especially for avid whitewater enthusiasts.

However, the Raundal Canyon boasts breathtaking scenery throughout the entire summer. Since the Raundal River isn't dam-controlled, water levels vary, ensuring an excellent experience throughout the season. So, whether it's the thrill of powerful rapids or the beauty of the canyon, any time during the season is a great choice for rafting.

Do I need prior experience to go whitewater rafting?

No, you don't need any prior experience at all.

The majority of our guests are first-timers, and everything—from our trips to our equipment and briefings—is tailored to make beginners feel comfortable. Our seasoned guides will give you a safety orientation before hitting the water and will be there to guide and coach you through every rapid. No previous whitewater experience is required—we've got you covered!

Do I need to be physically fit to go rafting?

For everyone joining us on a rafting adventure, we suggest being in good physical shape.

If you have any medical concerns but still want to join the rafting trip, it's always wise to consult with your doctor beforehand. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities.

Keep in mind, we offer two distinct levels of rafting experiences to choose from based on your level of fitness and desire for adrenaline:

- Family rafting, which is easier and more suitable for a relaxed outing.
- Grade 3 rafting in Raundal, offering a bit more thrill and adventure for those seeking an adrenaline-packed experience.

Will I fall out the raft? If I do, what should I do?

Our primary goal is for everyone to stay safely in the boat, but surprisingly, some actually enjoy the thrill of going overboard. It can be initially disorienting, yet exhilarating. Many people have taken multiple trips and never fallen in, while some experience it on their first outing. It's all part of the river rafting experience.

Before entering the river, you'll receive thorough guidance on handling an unexpected dip and how to navigate the water confidently. By following your guide's instructions, your unexpected 'swim' might just become the highlight of your adventure—a tale to share with friends later on!

How do you know the water level of the river?

The Raundal River has a gauge near Palmafossen that provides hourly updates to Norway's Department of Hydrology (NVE). They monitor water levels for various reasons like flood prevention and electricity pricing, and this information is accessible on their website. We also keep track of the river flow through an app for continuous monitoring.

What is the water temperature?

It's challenging to pinpoint the exact temperature at any given time, so here's a breakdown for reference:

May: Ranges between 5°C to 8°C due to the melting season.
June: Still melting, varying from 7°C to 12°C.
July: Typically between 11°C to 19°C, influenced by remaining snow in high mountains and the Hardangervidda plateau. If little snow remains with hot air temperatures, water can be warmer by mid-July. Some summers, guests opt-out of wearing wetsuits by then.
August: Ranging from 10°C to 17°C.
September: Varies from 9°C to 15°C.
October: Usually between 8°C to 13°C.
Outdoor Norway provides guests with essential gear like a wetsuit (John), wetsuit jacket, neoprene river boots, and a water-resistant/wind-resistant jacket to ensure warmth.

Additionally, if you ask a Vestlander (a Norwegian from the west), they might simply say, 'The water is fresh.' This implies it's never too cold, always suitable for adventure—all you need is the right equipment.

What is the difference between family rafting and Grade 3 rafting?

While both rafting experiences promise adventure, the family rafting trip offers a more moderate level of excitement suitable for beginners and families with small kids, navigating Grade II rapids. On the other hand, Grade III river rafting caters to both beginners and experienced rafters, offering a more exhilarating experience with challenging rapids in the 'Play Section' of the Raundal river. On both trips you will have to work as a team.

Can I leave my bag/luggage at the base?

Yes absolutely, that's not an issue at all.

We have shelves available for storing your belongings while you're out on a tour. Rest assured, there's always a member of our staff present at the base, so your items will be securely looked after— nothing goes missing on our watch!

Do I need to sign a waiver?

Yes.

Upon joining any activity, a waiver acknowledging risks must be read and signed. For minors, a parent or guardian is required to sign the waiver.
