 TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

  • Scenic view of the mountains surrounding the river and the crystal clear water you are paddling in.
  • Many fun grade 2 rapids and many other grade 1 rapids.
  • Palmafossen – 15m high waterfall on the Raundal River.
  • Fish Ladders are one of the most commonly used methods to grow the fish population in Norway. These ‘Ladders’ help by allowing the fish to access larger areas of the river upstream which they otherwise could not access due to large obstacles in the river that they can’t swim up – e.g. waterfalls. By helping the fish to come up such previously impassable obstacles, it gives them more space to breed and feed.  Fish Ladders have great significance for the maintenance of biodiversity and productivity. In the current situation with many endangered stocks of salmon and freshwater fish, this is particularly important.

FAQ

Is prior experience required for river canoeing?

No, it isn't necessary.

The majority of our guests are first-timers, and our trips, equipment, and briefings are tailored to make beginners feel comfortable. Our experienced guides will offer a safety orientation before you embark on the water and will provide continuous guidance throughout the rapids.

What is the best time of year to go river canoeing?

The ideal time for river canoeing varies based on the river's conditions:

The rivers typically fluctuate from May to October. High water levels occur usually from June to mid-July, coinciding with the snow melting season. This period offers exhilarating rapids, especially for avid river enthusiasts.

However, the Raundal Canyon boasts breathtaking scenery throughout the entire summer. Since the Raundal River isn't dam-controlled, water levels vary, ensuring an excellent experience throughout the season. So, whether it's the thrill of powerful rapids or the beauty of the canyon, any time during the season is a great choice for river canoeing.

What safety measures are in place for children aged 5 to 10?

For children between 5 and 9 years old, there's a stable raft option available, particularly advisable when the river water level is moderate or high. Upon check-in, our guide will assess this alongside the guardian. In instances where the river water level is high, for safety purposes, the use of a more stable vessel becomes mandatory.

Do we need to be physically fit to go river canoeing?

Yes, we suggest that all participants in our canoeing experiences have good physical health.

If you have any medical concerns but still wish to go river canoeing, we always advise consulting with your doctor beforehand.

Will I be at risk of falling out of the canoe? If I do, what should I do?

Our primary goal is for everyone to stay safely in the boat, but surprisingly, some actually enjoy the thrill of going overboard. It can be initially disorienting, yet exhilarating. Many people have taken multiple trips and never fallen in, while some experience it on their first outing. It's a part of the river canoe experience.

Before entering the river, you'll receive thorough guidance on handling an unexpected dip and how to navigate the water confidently. By following your guide's instructions, your unexpected 'swim' might just become the highlight of your adventure—a tale to share with friends later on!

Is the trip appropriate for seniors?

There's no upper age limit for our tours; as long as you're physically fit, you're more than welcome to join us!

Additionally, our scenic float offers an incredible river experience for those who prefer a gentler ride and aren't keen on Grade III rapids.

What should I bring with me for a fjord kayak tour?

Before your activity, you will receive a detailed list of recommended items to bring, including appropriate clothing and gear for the activity.

For river canoe tours, attire should be weather-appropriate and might include:

- Swimwear (to wear under the wetsuit)
- Thermal underwear (if cold)
- Extra clothes for changing after the trip
- Towel
- Sunscreen

Regarding weather conditions:

Whitewater rafting is fantastic whether it's sunny or rainy!

When does your season start and end, and what is the best time of year to go river canoeing?

We kick off our river canoeing season once the river is free of ice, continuing until the snow starts to fall! Typically, this runs from early May to late October, but it's all in the hands of Mother Nature! You can find our current opening dates and times on our webpage.

Should I tip my guide?

Tipping isn't customary in Norway, as it is e.g. in the USA. Our guides put in considerable effort to ensure your experience is both enjoyable and safe, maintaining the high standards set by Outdoor Norway.

While tipping is recognized as a standard practice in the industry and is always welcomed, it's never an obligation. It's entirely up to your discretion whether you choose to leave a tip. Your appreciation for the service provided is greatly valued either way.

How do you know the water level of the river?

The Raundal River has a gauge near Palmafossen that provides hourly updates to Norway's Department of Hydrology (NVE). They monitor water levels for various reasons like flood prevention and electricity pricing, and this information is accessible on their website. We also keep track of the river flow through an app for continuous monitoring.

What is the water temperature?

It's challenging to pinpoint the exact temperature at any given time, so here's a breakdown for reference:

- May: Ranges between 5°C to 8°C due to the melting season.
- June: Still melting, varying from 7°C to 12°C.
- July: Typically between 11°C to 19°C, influenced by remaining snow in high mountains and the Hardangervidda plateau. If little snow remains with hot air temperatures, water can be warmer by mid-July. Some summers, guests opt-out of wearing wetsuits by then.
- August: Ranging from 10°C to 17°C.
- September: Varies from 9°C to 15°C.
- October: Usually between 8°C to 13°C.

We provide our guests with essential gear like a wetsuit (John), wetsuit jacket, neoprene river boots, and a water-resistant/wind-resistant jacket to ensure warmth.

Fun fact: if you ask a Vestlander (a Norwegian from the west), they might simply say, 'The water is fresh.' This implies it's never too cold, always suitable for adventure—all you need is the right equipment.

Can I leave my bag/luggage at the base?

Yes absolutely, that's not an issue at all.

We have shelves available for storing your belongings while you're out on a tour. Rest assured, there's always a member of our staff present at the base, so your items will be securely looked after— nothing goes missing on our watch!

Do I need to sign a waiver?

Yes.

Upon joining any activity, a waiver acknowledging risks must be read and signed. For minors, a parent or guardian is required to sign the waiver.
